In what has already been billed as a potential RBS 6 Nations title decider, England travel to Dublin with both sides on the hunt for revenge at the Aviva Stadium.
Titans will clash all over the pitch – even if we have to wait a little longer to see Manu Tuilagi lock horns with Brian O’Driscoll after Billy Twelvetrees kept his place – with both sides looking to avenge recent defeats.

For England, it is their 2011 defeat in Dublin, when tries from O’Driscoll and Tommy Bowe sealed a 24-8 win for Ireland and denied Martin Johnson’s side the Grand Slam.

For Ireland, it’s last year’s hefty 30-9 loss at Twickenham when their front row was run ragged by England’s, particularly after Mike Ross left the fray through injury.

Ireland insist that they have proved they can scrum with the best of them since and are buoyed from last weekend’s first half performance in the 30-22 win in Wales.

Stuart Lancaster’s confidence in his England side is made evident by his decision to resist the temptation to throw Tuilagi back into his side, opting instead to reward Twelvetrees with a second cap after his fine debut in the 38-18 win over Scotland.

And Lancaster is relishing the chance to let Tuilagi loose from the bench.

“We were pleased with our intent to play against Scotland,” he said.

“A lot of the players performed very well and with Manu coming back into the equation it gave us some selection decisions.

“But with the centres playing well last week and Manu still returning to match fitness, having not played for the last four weeks, he and others will give us great options from the bench in what I am sure will be a physical encounter.”

With Twelvetrees keeping his place, Lancaster has made just one change to the side that defeated Scotland with Ben Morgan forced out with an ankle injury.

Tom Wood moves from blindside flanker to No.8 while James Haskell comes in for his first RBS 6 Nations start since 2011.

Ireland meanwhile, are unchanged from the side that romped into a 30-3 lead after 45 minutes at the Millennium Stadium before departing with the victory despite a second half spent largely with their backs against the wall.

It means Gordon D’Arcy, Ross, Rob Kearney, Peter O’Mahony, Sean O’Brien and Keith Earls have all shrugged off knocks and are fit to take part in what will be Brian O’Driscoll’s 57th Championship start – a new record.

“I expect Sunday’s game to be another level up as both teams have a game under their belt,” said Ireland head coach Declan Kidney.

“The players have recovered pretty well from the Wales game. We took 48 hours off after the match and have toned down training since.

“Gordon, Peter and Sean all trained fully this morning so we don’t envisage there being any changes.”

France head coach Philippe Saint-Andre admits his battle-weary troops are in less than perfect condition ahead of their RBS 6 Nations opener against Italy.

Les Bleus travel to Rome to kick off their bid for RBS 6 Nations glory on Sunday but Saint-Andre’s plans have been hindered by a string of injuries suffered in the last round of Top 14 games.Saint-Andre will have to do without the services of back-up flanker Wenceslas Lauret after he sustained a concussion playing for Biarritz against Toulouse on Friday night.

Lauret has three international appearances but had not been expected to add to them against Italy, and Saint-Andre has called up the uncapped Pierrick Gunther in his place.France are also without first-choice wing Vincent Clerc who suffered an injury to his thigh in the same fixture playing for Toulouse, with the uncapped Hugo Bonneval his replacement.

Castres’ promising full-back Brice Dulin was another victim of the weekend’s fixtures and is set to miss several weeks with a hamstring injury – Maxime Medard takes his place.

France are looking to build on their autumn internationals victories against Samoa, Argentina and Australia, which came on the back of a summer tour win against the Pumas. But Saint-Andre admits injuries could hamper his side’s start to the RBS 6 Nations.

“We are going into the Six Nations on the back of four successive wins. However, the players were fresh then,” said Saint-Andre. “I don’t know in what state I will have them now after Top 14 games and the European Cup pool matches.

“I have the impression that when we prepare for tournaments, others are competing in the 100 metres and we are in the 110m hurdles.

“We are the only country involved in the tournament who had a league programme on Friday and Thursday whilst the English have been together since last Sunday like the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and even the Italians.

“We should do the same as in England as I know from working there [at Sale and Gloucester]. There they play between tests and club rugby about 30 to 32 matches. Here we play around 40.

“We need to look after the players. It’s not so much about rest as development. In England they have five weeks off, four for holiday and one for development.

“In France our guys have four weeks of holidays and then it is straight back into friendly matches and then the Top 14 starts.”

Italy come into the match on the back of some impressive showings in the autumn internationals.

Their more creative approach and greater ambition under Jacques Brunel brought them victory over Tonga and a credible 22-19 defeat to Australia, though they fell 42-10 to New Zealand in between after matching them for an hour.

The Azzurri have won only one match in each of their last three RBS 6 Nations campaigns and finished with the wooden spoon on nine occasions.

Brunel has made three changes to his starting XV for the game at the Stadio Olimpico, with the South African-born scrum-half Tobie Botes replacing his Treviso teammate Edoardo Gori.

Luke McLean will get the chance to add to his 41 caps after being drafted in on the left wing in place of the injured Mirco Bergamasco, who is still recovering from a fractured kneecap suffered against Australia. With Mauro also absent, that means there will be no Bergamasco brother in the squad for the first time in 13 years.

Treviso flanker Simone Favaro has also come into the side at openside, with Robert Barbieri dropping out of the match day 22.

The only RBS 6 Nations debutant among Brunel’s squad is 25-year-old back rower and lock Francesco Minto, who made his international bow against the All Blacks in November.

But captain Sergio Parisse believes Italy are ready to improve on last season’s fifth-placed finish, starting by taking the game to France on Sunday.

“If we play 100 per cent and concentrate on every match then we have no fear of any team,” said Parisse.

“At the Six Nations we have five matches to be in every single match and play our best and I’m really confident of my team.

“In November we started badly against Tonga and we still won, a few years ago we would play badly against them and still lose. We had 60 great minutes against New Zealand and the level was just a bit too much for us.

“Against Australia we had a poor first half but the way that we came back in the second half we scored 15 points and in the last minutes we missed a kick to probably win the match.”

England coach Stuart Lancaster is hoping to ignite the spirit of Twickenham after making just two changes from the side that so memorably beat New Zealand for the opening RBS 6 Nations clash against Scotland.

With Manu Tuilagi ruled out with an ankle problem Billy Twelvetrees has been handed an England debut and the Gloucester centre is charged with the task of repeating the 38-21 victory over the All Blacks in the Red Rose’s final autumn international.The only other change in the starting XV comes at loosehead prop with Harlequins’ Joe Marler replacing the injured Alex Corbisiero.

There are three changes on the bench with Dylan Hartley, Toby Flood and David Strettle replacing David Paice, Freddie Burns and Jonathan Joseph.

England’s road to redemption after a disappointing World Cup began at Murrayfield in last year’s RBS 6 Nations, where England ground out an uninspiring but crucial 13-6 win to retain the Calcutta Cup, the trophy Scotland last held in 2009.

Since the Calcutta Cup was first competed for in 1879, England has won just over half of the 119 matches but Lancaster is not getting complacent despite naming a settled side.

“We are happy to stick with the team that did so well against New Zealand, especially in light of the fact that they have all been in good form for their clubs since then,” he said.

“There were some very tight calls, with some experienced players coming back into contention, and I am sure the bench will have a significant impact on the game.

“We can’t wait to get back to Twickenham and hopefully experience the same atmosphere as the autumn when the crowd was superb. It means a lot to the players to have such support in the ground and watching on television.

“Last year we were the interim group going up to Scotland, probably not expected to win, and it’s amazing how much you can galvanise a team in that situation.

“New Zealand counts for nothing come Saturday, we have to make sure that we still respect Scotland.”

There is also a debutant in Scotland’s ranks, withNew Zealand-born wing Sean Maitlandbeing thrown in at the deep end by interim Scotland coach Scott Johnson.

Johnson has also handed recalls to hooker Dougie Hall, who will make his first Scotland start for six years, as well as back row Johnnie Beattie who has been revitalised since a summer move to Montpellier.

Maitland, 24, has made just a handful of appearances for Glasgow Warriors since his switch from the Crusaders this season but Johnson has no qualms with his decision that he hopes can help end their 30-year wait for a win over England at Twickenham.

“Sean Maitland is very proud to be pulling on the Scotland jersey for the first time,” said Johnson.

“His family will be rapt because they raised him in New Zealand always reminding him of his Scottish heritage, getting up in the early hours of the morning to watch both the Five and Six Nations games on the TV.

“He’s shown he can play footy with the best of them and the impact he’s made since arriving at Glasgow in the autumn has underlined what we’d seen of him playing for the Crusaders in Super Rugby.

“I will not have to say too much in terms of the challenge at hand, especially from a historical point of view.

“The fact is that every team goes to Twickenham with the same aim and objective and we are no different.

“There is a lot of pressure on us, just as there is them. We have got a lot of supporters that we need to do well for as well as for ourselves.”

This time 12 months ago Wales – buoyed by their World Cup semi-final appearance – took the first steps towards a memorable Grand Slam with victory over Ireland.

On Saturday they’ll look to begin the defence of their RBS 6 Nations crown as a team burdened, not however by the defending champions tag, but by their recent history.Seven consecutive defeats since they clinched the Six Nations title with victory over France last spring has left caretaker coach Rob Howley with a considerable headache.

His solution may come in the form of Andrew Coombs, who will make his Test debut alongside Ian Evans in the second row with locks Alun Wyn Jones, Bradley Davies and Luke Charteris all sidelined.

And with Rhys Priestland nursing an Achilles injury, Howley has given Ospreys’ Dan Biggar the task of filling the fly-half role as Wales look to end a seven-game losing run that represents their worst results sequence since 2003.

Captain Sam Warburton retains his familiar No.7 shirt whilst Aaron Shingler assumes blindside duties and Howley has reunited the 2009 British and Irish Lions Test front row of Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees and Adam Jones.

Ireland full-back Rob Kearney has stoked the fires with talk of potential panic in the Welsh ranks if things don’t go their way early on at the Millennium Stadium.

Add in a second row injury crisis – Bradley Davies and Luke Charteris will miss the tournament while there are doubts over Ryan Jones and Ian Evans – and the picture painted is far from rosy.

However Howley insists that, despite their recent struggles – among the Welsh defeats in the autumn was a humbling loss to Samoa – they’ll be giving everything to defend their crown.

“We have had a blip but the players will come in as Six Nations champions and title holders. We will not give that up easily,” said Howley.

“The injuries have been talked about, but I want to focus on the team going forward.

“We have always believed in talent, and it flourishing in our national environment.

“We are proud of the tag of Grand Slam champions and we want to defend our crown.

“The experience we had of winning the Six Nations has been very special.

“We want to replicate that and having that experience makes us very proud.

“We won’t relinquish the title easily and that is our goal because we want to back up our Six Nations campaign of last year.”

Since kicking the last-minute penalty to secure a 23-21 win in Ireland last year Leigh Halfpenny has firmly established himself as Wales’ go-to kicker.

With fly-half Rhys Priestland absent for the entire campaign due to an Achilles injury, Dan Biggar looks likely to take the coveted Welsh No. 10 jersey.

Ireland have been rocked by their own fly-half saga in their preparations with Jonny Sexton set to move on to pastures new next season.

However the injury problems of their autumn campaign have abated somewhat, Brian O’Driscoll, Sean O’Brien, Rory Best and Kearney are all back and raring to go with only Paul O’Connell and last year’s RBS 6 Nations top-scorer Tommy Bowe ruled out for the tournament.

Having skippered the side in O’Driscoll’s absence No. 8 Jamie Heaslip will lead the side out at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday afternoon and Kidney said: “I would like to think we are up there with the tournament favourites after coming through November.

“In that first week of the autumn series I don’t think there was a day went by where I was told there was not someone available.

“But a few players put up their hands and we will look to build on that.

“Jamie has done the job well with Leinster and was a good captain in the autumn series.

“With Brian O’Driscoll being such an iconic figure in world rugby, it was always going to be a big story when you replace him as captain.

“When you make a decision like this you have to make it in the best interests of the team and the individuals.”

The Six Nations Championship,known for sponsorship reasons as the RBS 6 Nations, is an annual international rugby union competition involving six European sides: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

The Six Nations is the successor to the Five Nations Championship (1910–31 and 1947–99) which in turn succeeded the Home Nations Championship (1883–1909 and 1932–39). The Home Nations Championship, played between teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, was the first international rugby union tournament.The winners of the Six Nations Championship are also known as the European Champions.

Wales are the current title holders, winning each of its matches played during the 2012 Championship, to achieve a Triple Crown and Grand Slam.

The winners of the Six Nations are presented with the Championship Trophy.This was originally conceived by the Earl of Westmorland, and was first presented to the winners of the 1993 championship, France. It is a sterling silver trophy, designed by James Brent-Ward and made by a team of eight silversmiths from the London firm William Comyns; it is valued at £55,000. Although originally silver on the inside, the trophy became so corroded through celebratory champagne fillings[citation needed] that it is now plated with 22 carat gold for protection.

It has 15 side panels representing the 15 members of the team and with three handles to represent the three officials (referee and two touch judges). The cup has a capacity of 3.75 litres – sufficient for five bottles of champagne. Within the mahogany base is a concealed drawer which contains six alternate finials, each a silver replica of one of the team emblems, which can be screwed on the detachable lid.
